The smiths could be very ignorant, because of their high ranking in the society. Here is an example with a transcript from a parish council meetin in Ore 1803, 22 of May: During the meeting, the smith Abraham Ernberg entered the room with his hat on. The reverent (Moberg), told him to take of his hat. Abraham ignorantly answered: It is my hat and my smoking-pipe. The reverent rose up and and reminded him about the power of his office, and the sacred room he was in. Abraham just answered: I have paid for my hat and my pipe myself, which is more than you can say. Then he made a small pause and continued: You are not the king or his representative. After that he was thrown out of the room.
